I think the writing is on the wall for Spikes, he is gone after the year (heck a trade before wouldnt shock me int he least if Collins impresses in camp, but i doubt it... still think they are going to trade for a WR may that be my original target Maclin, or just another Doug Gabriel who can be a #3 wr for a season). they learned their lesson with the last ex Gator and his extension. Spikes, though not voilent issues, has off the field stuff that im sure bothers the team. Mostly how he talks and makes controversial comments on social media (although he hasnt been on twitter since Febuary sine tweeting "TRANSFORMATION") as well as other things like not going to OTAs.
Spikes also always struck me as the player who doesnt like being in NE. He once put "hell on earth" (mid season mind you, i believe while he was hurt with a knee injury) for his 'location' in his twitter bio which is where all atheletes list their current team, college team, and hometown. He also always used to tweet about hating the snow and cold in the winter. He has always struck me as the guy who would work hard to earn a contract and take the best financial deal no matter what team offers it (unless its a cold weather team)---which wont be NE --------- maybe next year we see more of a 3-4 look (and more COllins in the base D), but for now IMO this will be an attacking 4-3 D with Vince and Kelly in the middle and Jones and Nink on the edges, and Mayo as the WILL Hightower playing SAM and Spikes at MIKE. Collins comes in on 3rd down/passing situations for Spikes, hightower may even kick down to the line and nink come off for the nickle back (Arrington) to come on, and (assuming he makes the team which isnt close to a lock IMO) A Wilson coming off for Gregory or T Wilson on passing downs

we should start a prediction thread, with numbers for all our players and see who got close to their predictions at the end of the season. Also we talked about Fantasy football. Are we on for this?

You can start your own threads if you'd like. As of now there are three threads. 1. General Patriots and overall football conversation here 2. The Dennard problem 3. What are the key story lines for NE heading into camp? The first thread has over 100 messages and is this thread. The other two are ones I started, but no one has joined in. Using the thread creation feature here may take some time since we could not do it at the other site, but I think it will improve message flow once we start using it.

Cass, I agree about Spikes. I think he'll run for the biggest contract offer he gets from any team from the southeast, teams like Mia, NO or Car maybe.
I really don't see us bringing in another WR. DA is clearly our #1. I would imagine we plan to use Edelman like we were before he got hurt last year, as an OW (a la Denard Robinson). I don't think Gabriel brings anything to the team that we don't already have. I'd much rather see Dobson, Edelman and Boyce get the reps with TB even if they go through some growing pains. Our young guys and our team will be better in the long run than to bring in another average at best vet to stunt our young guys' growth. I'd rather have Donald Jones and even though Jenkins is a different type of WR than Gabriel, i'll take Jenkins possession WR ability. I just don't see the need. I think DA, JE, Jones, Jenkins and maybe even Hawkins will be enough to make us a 25 ppg offense until the rookie WRs get acclimated.
Besides when we had Welker and Moss together, we've never really had a great WR core. We've had old man Branch, a washed up Stallworth, Slater running deep routes and numerous other has beens. This group is obviously a bit unproven but it might be the best group we've had besides the Moss/Welker years. If Dobson lights it up early, it might become a stronger group 1-6 than we had 3-6 years ago.

I didnt actually mean Gabreil, haha i think he has been out of the league for a bit... I meant tthat type of move (aquiring Gabriel in 06 a week before week 1) and i mean this type of player if they dont like Jenkins lack of speed and play making ability and if Dobson isnt ready to man the X.

I knew Jones wouldnt make this team, and the second they signed Hawkins with big guaranteed $ i knew he had no shot (he didnt get 1 dollar guaranteed from us)
and Ofor, I agree about Thompkins. I heard good things about him from OTAs and also heard this 'story' if you will and what he has gone through. If anyone hasnt heard the backround on Thompson, check it out i believe Reiss had a nice story on it amongst others. I came away form the read with that 'wow i have a good feeling on him, seems like that type of guy who beats the odds after all of the adversity he faced', but i also said that about T Wilson and others so that means nothing

Just read the Pats would have paid Jones $200k just for showing up to camp. Hopefully this means they have confidence at least in a few of Dobson, Boyce, Harrison, Thompkins and Hawkins to play early.
I guess I need to check out Thompkins. They signed two FA no name WRs after cutting Jones, those two definitely won't be making the 53 man roster.

After yesterday's moves we have 88 players on the roster, 2 spots left. Would love to see a significant move made, maybe a John Abraham, Richard Seymour or Brandon Moore. We are looking good at DT but if for some reason Kelly doesn't work out, Corey Williams is still out there. Sheldon Brown, Rashean Mathis or Terrance McGee would be good insurance for Dennard, Dowling and Ryan, if none of them will be ready to be our #2.

Has anyone watched any film on Beauharnais? I keep reading how he could be a player to step up and see some action in passing situations this year. I looked at his 40 time and it wasn't too impressive for a smaller LB but I keep reading he has great quickness and change of direction. That's definitely the type of LB we have been missing. All we have had are the big, physical LBs that struggle in space. I'd love to go with the big 3 LBs, Collins, Fletcher and Beauharnais. Rivera, Tarpinian, Koutouvides, and Edds have plateau'd I think.
Anyone know if we cut or IR'd TJ Moe? I thought we cut him but just read a site that said we IR'd him.

Solid in run game, downhill player w/ a bunch of interceptions in coverage. Just off highlights this D should be top 8

Call me crazy but I could see 3 maybe 4 udfa making the team.
Nobody talking about Jason Vega. Dude looks fast off the line, ok athlete, can't wait to see him play. We have a bunch of De/ olb who should contribute in some form of fashion.
Vellano looks like a better close to elite run defender ,high motor guy.. Good backup IMO on the dline.

I've been reading a ton of stuff on the rookies today. Read even though they both were a reach where they were drafted, BB took Harmon and T.Wilson because they both can drop down and cover TEs. Guess he's known the rest of the league would be copying his TE craze. Hopefully they can both learn to defend the deep ball. Also read Buchanon lost some weight, speed and strength after an injury prior to last season but appears to gained them all back for OTAs. Hopefully that means we are getting the guy that looked like a possible 1st Rd pick.
Yes ofor, I was reading Vega looks very athletic and quick off the ball. I haven't watched any film on him yet like a lot of these new guys. Very true about Stevie B, I saw his career college stats earlier. He had like 270 tackles, double digit sacks and a handful of picks. Although I read one site that made him sound like a pure run stuffer that struggles in coverage and another site that made him sound like the opposite. Guess I'll have to see for myself.

Been reading a lot of reports about Bequette looking very impressive in OTAs. Obviously it's just in shorts with no real contact but I've read he has looked quick off the edge and has good body control/movement. I was hoping he got more of a chance last year. Even if we put him in and he struggled, it wouldn't have been any different from the rest of our pass rush but it would've given him some game experience. He's definitely one of the top 5 guys I'm looking forward to seeing this TC along with Dobson, Collins, Dowling and Vellano.
Also saw a few sites predicting Mark Harrison snags the last WR spot ahead of Jenkins. Those sites had DA, JE, Dobson, Boyce, Harrison and Slater as our WR group. If that was to happen, our rookies would really have to step up during TC. I'm looking forward to watching some film on Harrison today, and Thompkins.

Dobson highlights: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH3ZNz6FLAc&feature=youtube_gdata_playerHate to say it but I see some of Randy Moss in him. Great balls skills, is better with the ball after the catch, and is more physical. I'm more fired up about him than any offensive rookie probably since Bledsoe. How dangerous will this offense be if Dobson and Brady are rolling by the time Gronk comes back?! How about a lineup with Ridley at RB with Gronk, Amendola, Dobson and Vereen on the field. That's about as dangerous a lineup as anyone in the NFL. Not much film on Thompkins besides a few TDs catches, there's more film on his brother. Collins highlights: www.youtube.com/watch?v=apBG0RA_cKQ&feature=youtube_gdata_playerVery athletic, unlike any LB we've had for awhile. Good closing speed and change of direction. Made a few bad reads but probably didn't have the best coaching in college. Should be our best all around 3rd down defender from day 1. Steve B: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVClFZzL5Ck&feature=youtube_gdata_playerWow am I completely impressed with Beauharnais. I don't know if I've ever seen an undersized LB as good vs the run as he is. He slips and side steps blocks so easily, he looks almost unblockable in that 30 min clip. Appears to be an extremely intelligent player and being a team leader is always a plus. Should be a great STs player and maybe some 3rd down reps in coverage if he earns BB's trust. Another Steve B clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=htVpiitO_0I&feature=youtube_gdata_playerThis one shows him looking very good in coverage. Reads the QB very well, looks good changing direction in space and attacking the ball. From the clips I've seen, I'd have to put Beauharnais ahead of Collins in coverage ability right now. Collins definitely has the advantage athletically so with some good coaching and reps, hopefully we just drafted two good 3rd down LBs. Harrison highlights: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4686tLeqw0&feature=youtube_gdata_playerDefinitely a good athlete for his size but I don't know if he's just a combine warrior or not. Doesn't look very fluid in his routes or after the catch, sort of looks like he lumbers even though he's moving fast. Thompkins looked a little more fluid and coordinated in the few clips I saw of him. Either way I'm on board with taking a chance on either one of these big WRs over Jenkins. Yes Jenkins might be the safe way to go but its okay if we go through some growing pains in the regular season as long as its all worked out come playoff time. Buchanan: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6OqwQGCq2Q&feature=youtube_gdata_playerLooks like a good athlete but not elite. Lacks the quick twitch ability you see from elite pass rushers. I don't know if he can be taught that. Plays too upright a lot. Good pick for Rd 7, maybe a candidate for PS or IR if he has some upside. He has the same waste of time stutter step as Chandler Jones off the snap but when finally gets moving up field, you see him beat T's around the edge with some speed and the hand fighting ability to knock the T's hands away as he runs by them. I don't know, I'm torn on him right now. Vega looks very athletic and appears to have the quick twitch ability that's great for pass rushers but I can't find many clips on him. A lot of the clips I've seen of him appear to be him going against high school sophomore competition trying to block him. I'd like to see more of him.

take a look at Hunt and Buchanan vs Lane Johnson @ Senior Bowl...Im vry impressed w/ Buchanan. he is the DE w/ red helmet number 99. @ 3:36 beats Lane Johnson at the snap and got held by him, @3;46 they started chipping him w/ runningback, @4:08 wash Lane Johnson like a rag doll to the ground (vet like power), i wont spoil the tape but watch it..At 6'6 and raw he brings plenty to work with and probably the best motor i've seen. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc4m0i2bsbU

Good morning fellas.
clduds34 - I hope Harrison makes the cut. It said that he isnt the brightest person in the world but from a physical standpoint you gatta love his potential down field and in the redzone. Real excited about this rookie WR class we have coming in. It may be a gray area and you always want more veteran experience but you cant deny the talent that they are bringing in. Add that with Brady and I think a couple of these guys will flash early if not make a solid contribution.
I know its unproven right now but on paper, this defense looks like it can be among the best. I hope teams get punished 3rd and long. If Jones is up to 280 as they are reporting... look out!

Buchanan did look good on a few reps in that clip ofor. I have also seen clips of him last year where he looks average at best, just gets lost in the crowd and swallowed up by the T play after play. It was definitely a down year for him. I don't know if it's a motivation thing or I heard after an injury prior to last season, he lost weight, strength and speed and wasn't himself all season. I hope that is the case and he shows some ability in TC. He's got that prototypical 4-3 DE size at 6'6" 250. It'd be nice to finally have a DE that can get pressure and bat balls down.
I agree md, I'm really starting to get excited about the rookie WRs. I'm hoping BB finally gets over this obsession with only trusting old, slow, washed up vet WRs and gives all these rookies a real shot. They'll obviously have their ups and downs but we'll be better in the long run. Let them learn from their mistakes on the field. Playing Jenkins for the first half of the season isn't going to do anything for us in January or for the rookies development. I'd love to see Dobson and Boyce with either Thompkins or Harrison make the team with DA, JE and Slater. I'm leaning toward Thompkins, who looks a little more fluid and a more natural athlete.
I'm not as excited about CJ as some others. If the team is really all about him packing on pounds, does that tell us that BB realizes he doesn't have to speed to play on the edge and should be moved inside? I think he'd be a solid undersized 3-4 DE or inside rusher on passing downs but that doesn't necessarily fix our lack of a rush from the outside.

I know its not Pats related but I was just looking at the Bengals D, damn they are stacked in their front 7. They are two deep at just about every front 7 position. They have Dunlap, M.Johnson, Hunt, Gilberry and Geathers at DE, Atkins, Peko, B.Thompson and D.Still at DT and Maualuga, Burfict, J.Harrison, S.Porter, Maybin and D.Moch. Moch hasn't even seen the field in two years because they are so stacked. I wouldn't mind going after him if our pass rush struggles and he is cut or put on the PS.
Their D will be scary good if Dre Kirkpatrick and Shawn Williams step up this year to go with Hall, Newman, Pacman Jones and Reggie Nelson. They are a perfect example of how a good pass rush can make a defense great.
Their O is looking pretty damn good too. They have Dalton, Green, Sanu, Gresham, Eifert, G.Bernard and BJGE to go with a very good OL. They're going to be tough to beat for the next 5-10 years. I could see them overtaking Bal and winning that division this year.
